Google's Data Safety Policy Update

October 5, 2022

What to know:

Recent changes to Google's Data Safety Policy require developers to declare how they collect and handle data for the apps they publish on Google Play. Developers with an app published on the Google Play Store must complete the Data safety form to include data collected and handled through any third-party libraries or SDKs used in their apps.

Cardinal Mobile SDK version 2.2.7-2 is now validating that your app has received consent on location data collection. Due to the Cardinal Mobile SDK version 2.2.7-2 update, you will need to download the updated version and update your Data safety form accordingly.

What is Changing?

We collect location data in accordance with EMVCo specifications. Cardinal’s Mobile SDK checks permission and then collects and uses the user’s location data. Permission to collect location data is pre-built into our SDK. Beginning with Cardinal Mobile SDK version 2.2.7-2 for Android, we are now instructing merchant apps to determine if consent has been given. Merchant apps will now inform the SDK if consent has been collected via a new function in the Configuration parameters of the Cardinal Mobile SDK.

What to Do:

Once Cardinal Mobile SDK version 2.2.7-2 is published in October 2022, you must download the latest SDK package and test in your lower environment(s). This applies to any merchant using Cardinal Mobile SDK version 2.2.7-1 or older for Android. If you do not upgrade, your app could be flagged in accordance with Google's Data Safety policy. Cardinal will send out communication once the Cardinal Mobile SDK version of 2.2.7-2 has been published.
